Coming up next week: EuroMeSCo Annual Conference 2018

EuroMeSCo (the main Euro-Mediterranean network of think tanks gathering about a hundred think tanks and institutions from both shores of the Mediterranean), the European Institute of the Mediterranean and the OCP Policy Center are organising the 2018 EuroMeSCo Annual Conference “Changing Euro-Mediterranean Lenses”, to be held in Rabat on 12-13 July 2018.
In Euro-Mediterranean fora, the focus is most often on the state of the South and Southeast part of the Mediterranean and its impact of its political, economic and security situation on the European Union.
This conference will invite high-level policymakers and researchers to challenge this prevailing approach and analyze how recent developments in Europe affect the southern shore of the Mediterranean and more generally Euro-Mediterranean relations.

What can Africa learn from RIAs?

In the developing world, regional integration agreements are often perceived as key opportunities to promote development, strengthen trade relations, enhance foreign relations and improve investments. However, the questions remain, how can the economic impacts of these agreements be evaluated? What approaches work best towards defining this impact? These are questions addressed by our researchers Fatima Ezzahra Mengoub, Tharcisse Guèdègbé and senior research fellow of the International Food Policy Research Institute, Will Martin, in this policy brief.

Tantrums for emerging markets

Otaviano Canuto is back with another rich analysis on emerging markets and the multiple tantrums they face. Sources of shock including the “political tantrum,” and the “trade tantrum,” are presented in this blog where he also discusses the effect of accentuation of country differentiation by using the cases of Turkey and Argentina, among others. In addition, by looking at factors, such as (but not limited to) the trade war between the U.S. and China, Canuto explains how these events can affect investment in emerging markets' assets.

"None of Africa’s problems can be resolved through military force"

In his weekly blog, Helmut Sorge examines the dynamics of the U.S. Africa Command activities in the continent. Helmut recounts on his intimate conversation with Colonel Raul Rivas, as they discussed, among other topics, the extent of American involvement in security operations in Africa. Based on General Waldhauser's strategy, as presented to Congress, Colonel Raul Rivas delivers the American action plan for the continent during the African Peace and Security Conference 2018.
